We then went into the prep area and Brandon was in heaven! They had lots of different ride on toys and he tried every one of them!

Grandma came to stay with us! 6/10/04

The staff was wonderful. I felt so reassured by everyone and so many people came by to introduce themselves (nurses, anesthesiologists, doctors). Brandon and I changed into our scrubs and our neighbor came on by just in time to see me looking like the abominable snowman!

They wanted to make sure Brandon was taking in liquids before taking out the IV so since he nursed, they took it out and soon released us. While waiting to leave, Brandon threw up, and then again in the car. Luckily we were warned about this.  At home, Brandon went to sleep pretty quickly in his crib and Bob made me and his mother go to sleep!  I was sleeping in Brandon's room with Brandon and after a while he woke up so Bob took him out but it turns out that he slept on Bob's shoulder for 3 hours on the couch! Bob didn't want to move! He was in heaven!

6/16/04 Brandon is doing wonderfully!  The next day he was running around with the kids outside and the neighbors were surprised that he had had surgery the day before!  He finally pulled the rest of the liquid bandage off and the scar is very slight so hopefully will fade in time!   We're thankful that Brandon recovered so quickly, fasted than any adult so in some way, it was good that the hernia was caught now.

6/10/04 Our day at the Hospital

Last month, at Brandon's 15 month check up, the doctor was concerned that he might have a hernia because there was a small bulge near his groin when he cried. I went to a Pediatric surgeon and sure enough, he had a "simple inguinal hernia" and needed to be operated on.  His surgery was set for the following week on Thursday, 6/10/04 because of a cancellation. The next available appointment was in July so we took it even though Bob was on call at work.  Bob's mother was so sweet to offer to come over, stay the night, and go to the hospital with me because she did not want me to be alone in the slight chance that Bob was called out.  Thank goodness she was coming over so my thoughts were on preparing the house instead of worrying about his surgery.  The night before, we found out that we had to be at the hospital at 6am! Yikes!  The good thing is that since Brandon couldn't eat past midnight, it wouldn't give him time to be hungry or irritable.  I did not get much sleep that night!

We woke up around 4am and got to the hospital at 6am.  Bob was not called out so he met us there.
This hospital is fantastic! It's the Bristol-Myers Squibb Children's Hospital at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick. We checked into the same day surgery area and they had Nickelodeon on TV and a rocking airplane that Brandon loved climbing on and off of. There were already a few children there waiting for various procedures.

Getting measured at the hospital 6/10/04

We had an entourage of staff escorting us to the operating room. One of the staff commented on what a star Brandon was with all the pictures that was being taken of him! I've never been in an operating room (knock on wood) so it was a little upsetting to see it for Brandon. But Brandon was quite happy pointing to the metal utensils on the table! Little did he know what they were going to be used for! I had to lay him down on the table while they put the bubble gum smelling mask on him. He cried but it was very quick because within seconds he was starting to fall asleep! I didn't want to leave him but they made me leave the room.

What is that nurse doing? 6/10/04

While in the waiting room, Bob showed his mother a survey that I filled out in one of the baby magazines on "you and your mother-in-law". Thank goodness I filled it out favorably!  This helped keep our minds off the operation. Of course there were silent prayers in between.  After 45 minutes the doctor came back and said that everything went fine. It turned out that Brandon didn't have an Inguinal hernia but a regular adult type hernia so the doctor had to put some extra stitching in. In the recovery room, Brandon soon woke up very cranky with arms and legs flailing. Brandon was ok and quite strong considering he was still groggy! The nurse (Marc, a wonderful man) put in some morphine in his IV to calm him down and I was able to hold him while he slept some more. Then he woke up and I breastfed him. Bob went out to tell his mother that Brandon was ok and at that moment our neighbor came back to see how things went. Bob took over and Brandon was quite comfy.
